Recap: Southern & LSU Student-Athletes Participate in 9/11 Day of Service

On the 20th anniversary of September 11th AFH University Baton Rouge sites paid tribute to the individuals lost and injured in the attacks, first responders, and the many who have risen in service to defend freedom with a day of service. The 9/11 Day of Service tailgate on the campus of LSU focused on educating event goers on emergency preparedness and generated over 100 thank you letters for local first responders.

Student-athletes facilitated The American Red Cross’s station which engaged children in The Pillowcase Project and educated adults on the importance of functional smoke detectors in homes. Through The Pillowcase Project, youth visited multiple tables learning about disaster preparedness and survival skills. Upon completion, they received a pillowcase to build their own emergency kit.

Justin Hill, public information officer for Baton Rouge Fire Department represented MOHSEP (Mayor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness) and provided vital information to be “Red Stick Ready” through emergency planning.

According to Hill, “9/11 is a great reminder of the importance of public service. While must of us will not be called upon to make the ultimate sacrifice, we still should make an effort to service others. Selflessly serving others is what what makes a community great.”

Thank you to Raising Canes and Urban League of Louisiana for their donations and all of our volunteers for making an impact in Baton Rouge!
