As part of our Unmasking Strength series this October, we’ve invited athletes to share the personal side of their journeys—focusing on how they maintain mental and emotional strength in and out of their sports. In the world of sprinting, Ronnie Baker is not just known for his incredible speed but also for his deep commitment to mental well-being. As a professional athlete, Ronnie understands that success on the track is just as much about mental strength as it is about physical conditioning. Through his thoughtful practices, he has learned to navigate the pressures of competition while maintaining a grounded perspective.
Q&A
How do you take care of your mental health?
“I choose to wake up early most days, spending an hour to an hour and a half reading my Bible and journaling. I also make sure to pray during this time. This practice helps balance me and allows me to clear my mind before the busy day starts. Another thing I like to do is what I call a brain dump. Sometimes my mind roams, thinking about the future and what I need to do in the next few hours or days. This can cause me anxiety, so I open up my notes app or take a piece of paper and write down everything I’m thinking about doing. This allows me to organize what needs to get done and prioritize tasks, helping me accomplish them while also allowing me to relax in the moment.”
What motivates you to keep going, even when things get tough?
“What motivates me to keep going, even when things get tough, is knowing that I have an uncanny ability to get through anything because of my deep inner strength. I live by the motto “defeat is optional” because my life has been riddled with challenges since I was a young child, and I overcame them to accomplish my dreams of becoming a professional and Olympic athlete. I have proven to myself that the only time I lose is if I choose to accept defeat. That’s why I will always persevere and live by the motto ‘defeat is optional.'”
Ronnie Baker’s journey reflects a profound understanding of the mind-body connection in sports. His daily rituals of prayer and reflection not only set a positive tone for his day but also serve as a reminder that mental health is a cornerstone of athletic performance. By embracing his philosophy that “defeat is optional,” Ronnie empowers himself and others to face challenges head-on. His story illustrates that true strength comes from within, and with the right mindset, we can rise above any obstacle that life throws our way.
